The Orthodox Jewish practice
was Psalms only for public
worship singing.
The early Christian position, and the reformed
position, was Sola Scriptura - Scripture (Psalms) only for public
worship singing.
"The introduction of uninspired hymns into the
worship of the church was a gradual process, and it was not until the
fourth century that the practice became widespread." - Michael
Bushell, The Songs of Zion, pg 122
"When uninspired hymns first made their
appearance, it was not among the orthodox churches but rather among the
heretical groups . . ." - G.I.Williamson, The Singing of Psalms
in the Worship of God, pg 16
"The duties required in the second commandment
are, the receiving, observing, and keeping pure and entire, all such
religious worship and ordinances as God has instituted in His word . . .
"The sins forbidden in the second commandment
are, all devising, counseling, commanding, using, and any wise
approving, any religious worship not instituted by God Himself; . . .
corrupting the worship of God, adding to it, or taking from it, whether
invented and taken up of ourselves, or received as tradition from
others, though under the title of antiquity, custom, devotion, good
intent . . .
"The reading of scriptures with Godly fear; the
sound preaching, and consionable hearing of the word, in obedience to
God, with understanding, faith, and reverence; singing of Psalms
with grace in the heart; . . . are all parts of the ordinary religious
worship of God . . . " - Westminister Confession of Faith 21:5
( See also Ephesians 5:19, James 5:13. )
